Finely ground calcium carbonate seems to act as a flocculant. It might tend to remove a fair amount of calcium and alkalinity from the water by acting as a source of nucleation sites. I don't think it'd add any to the water. Even as a very fine powder, not much can dissolve, since most tanks already are in supersaturation.
