By the presence (male) or absence (female) of an egg pouch under the belly. It is a bit tricky to distinguish, but on the other hand easier than with many other pipefish since these prefer to swim belly up.
Easiest is to check if you can see one blue line on the belly (female) or two close to each other (male) - the two lines are the edges of the skin sheets that form the egg pouch.
