seahorse fry and babies

So from what I've read the babies have to make the surface in order to inflate they swim bladder.

Does anyone know if this is true?
How long do they need?
Then from what I've read you don't want them to get back to the surface due to them snicking air.

Appreciate any responses from those that do seahorses.
