Is 2 sandwiched pieces of 3/8 glass equal the same strength as a single piece of 3/4" glass?

Wondering because I was all set to build an 8' x 3' tank with 18" sides for an oversized refugium, but after having the bottom pane set and the sides ready to go. Changed my mind. (went 3/8 because there would only have been maybe 12-16" of water and would have baffles connecting everything)

Now, I am going to get taller sides out of 3/4" x 30" for fish only (few large angels...not a fan of a ton of fish in a tank. The 750 has no more than 20 fish, with only 3 being on the larger size, in it and it looks just right to me). Would rather just get a second 3/8 bottom pane and silicone that to the one that is already in place and get new 3/4" sides.
