I have to agree with all of that. 1.5 inch pipe can handle a LOT of flow under syphon. It's not necessary unless you have a monster tank. I designed my tank as a peninsula so the end with the overflow I just let the coralline algae grow over it. I won't have to see the inside of the box eventually.
