Nope you can use Marine Board, but then it would be a Marine Board Tank and not a Starboard Tank..... or glass.

If you mean like rock rubble on the bottom or piled up in the sump to catch and hold detritus where water circulation can't get to it to get it to the overflow and skimmer and it's hard to get to it to siphon and without the benefit of a deep anaerobic sand bed to sink/store it and where it can just sit in the system and rot and release nutrients back into the tank......nope
