I have conchs as well, and they do that to anything new that is close enough to the sandbed for them to reach.
Clams, dusters, corals, live rock... my best guess is they're grazing off any algae that came in on the new items. They're very methodical about checking every surface and can spend hours in one spot, just barely moving their proboscis to graze.
