He probably didn't die from loneliness, but who knows? Anthias are Reef friendly fish, but they are same species community fish. That one is the male in absence of his harem of mates.
The other thing about Anthias is they're kind of like Mandarins...they require multiple feedings throughout the day which can be a very tedious chore.
At least you were able to enjoy him for the last 8 months, and he did look fat, so he probably just aged out.
