Yes, I've noticed the same. It's probably due to the lesser water volume of a BC14, which makes the tank so sensitive to outside temp changes. Once I upgrade this tank to an 18" high 25G cube, the light will be VERY close to the surface.
I actually received my ADA 24"x12"x18" yesterday but it has an undesirable scratch on the front face. I hope to get a cube replacement soon. I'll post pics as soon as I make the switch.
