I won't try to get into the whole gas exchange conversation but the reason I don't care for bubbles is the salt creep. Every time a bubble hits the surface and pops it splashes out a tiny amount of the salt. It may not seem like much but trust me, it will build up quickly. Even if you do use a glass top the salt will cake up on the underside in no time.
But hey, if you don't mind the wiping and like the bubbles then go for it! I think some people loose sight of the idea that it's your tank and you should be able to enjoy it the way you choose to. (This is not a jab at anyone in this thread, just a generalized opinion)
