Dave. M is totally correct as they are normally used in swimming pools but large aquaria do need a mechanical filter system to keep the water clean and clear .So instead of using socks , sand filters are frequently employed in large aquaria .
An example of sand filters used in large aquaria like this 20,000 gallon tank in long island.
