I have always grown up with a refugium. My dad has a 110 gallon refugium in the basement plumbed into his DT. Though he runs a fowlr and overfeeds so it helps him out.
That said I can see the benefits and no matter what you use it is better to have the algae in a controlled area. One can always cut back on the level of algae or ats run time to keep some nutrients in the DT if desired.
