Hi MSU Fan,
From what I understand, the inside cross braces from the front frame to the back frame are to prevent the two pieces from spreading apart. I would think if you place a vertical support under the cross brace (front and back) then there should be sufficient support for the tanks. Some one correct me if I am wrong. I will be building my first stand for my 180 g using the information I found on this thread. There is lots of good information, ideas, pictures and technical information to support these stands.
