Honestly the skimmers have a ton of potential if you're willing to work with them. Regardless of the performance $3,000 which i believe is what the 1860's were selling for is a good deal for the body alone. They are built like a tank and proportions are great, regardless of the cone revolution going on now.

Just work on tweaking it for your system, are you/what airpump are you currently running?

There are a couple options, sparks is testing the ATB/laguna 4200 on their volcano right now which is most likely what I'll be using on mine when its finished.

Another solid option is going old school, which works very well and using the alita and air stones, jnarowe has great success with his airstone skimmer as have many others.
