I'd go with 2.
1) because just as you say it'd be easier to upgrade in the future
2) there's always a chance one could get clogged or partially obstructed
3) its really quite easy to drill, so why not?
I'd also have recommended just using pvc fittings and a rubber gasket as bulkheads
