In my very simple understanding, it's basically like breathing. During the day coral and whatever algae you have growing photosynthesize. At night the other half of that cycle is basically degassing excess CO2. More CO2 in the tank decreases the PH. Add any sort of item growing macro algae, fuge or reactor, and run the light opposite the display tank. This causes the macro to take up that CO2 and keeping the tank more balanced.
