Thing is, is you didn't have excess nutrients in the water, the light alone wouldn't cause the algae issues. All the lights did was shine light ( pun intended ) on an existing issue.

Well see the light was left on for like 3 days when I got home from vacation I had the algae problem. My tank has been set up for like 6 months and have used tap water since the first day.

a light on for 3 days will certainly cause some algae issues

The light still isn't the source of your problem, it's your water. Light alone will not cause algae. As long as you continue to use tap water the problem will only get worse if you get stronger lights.

A month ago I forgot to set the timer for my lights and they stayed on all weekend. When I came back I didn't have an algae issue. I attribute this to good water.

Exactly, I have live rock in my sumps, the lights over them stay on all the time (( haven't set up the timers since my move June 1st )), and I am not having an algae bloom.

Wow that really sucks about price for ro/di my lfs sell it for .50 cents and a buck per gallon for premix. Just to let you know adding a powerhead won't help with algea but you should invest in a clean up crew some turbo snails, scarlet crabs that's a better option than just adding more current to tank
