Stan's 75g Rimless Reef

Well...
I was sick of my current tank. I really wanted a nicer and cleaner set up. So here's my upgrade (from a 46g Oceanic Bowfront).

My brand spankin' new 75g Deep Blue Edge Series w/ low iron (high clarity glass) on 3 sides.

And here is a run-down of the equipment..
  • 75g Deep Blue Edge Series
  • DIY Stand w/ Maple "skin" & "drop-in" style top
  • DIY LED Fixture (30 Blue & 18 White)
  • AGA 29g Tall Sump
  • ASM G-2 Protein Skimmer (rated for 200g)
  • Eheim 1260 Return Pump
  • VorTech MP10
  • Phosban 150 Reactor (1 - Carbon & 1 - GFO)
  • Eheim Jager 250w Heater

Here are some progress pics on the stand I started today with my Dad.

My current electrical for the current tank is a nightmare.

So to help organize and simplify, I'm going to pick up one of these..

The frame for the stand is just about done. Still deciding what to "skin" it with... but saw some nice Maple/Birch plywood for a decent price at Lowes... so might go with that. Not sure if I'm going to stain it, but will definitely give it a high gloss "glassy" appearance with Minwax Helmsman polyurethane.

Definitely recommend this one, gives such a great thick glassy coat.

Hopefully frame will be finished tomorrow, and then will get started with the exterior!

*JARRETT -- going to need your help with the plumbing! hehe

I was just looking at the 75 rimless yesterday at a LFS. My only concern was the HUGEEEE overflow in the middle. I did see some clever rockscaping to compensate for it, I will look for the link later and post it for you.

Best of Luck!!

UPDATE!

Frame done!

Stand is 45" tall. I love it! Going to be a lot easier to take care of my sump without squeezing my fatness into a small opening!

Amazon. $26 shipped.

I know I'm not crazy about the overflow either, however when you're in college, have limited funds and find an amazing deal on a brand new tank.. I had to get it. I plan to have 2 islands.. and gotta figure out what to do the overflow.

Thanks guys. I love the tank. Can't stop looking at it, and its not even filled with water yet! Hahaha. The blueish hue on the edges of the glass looks really cool when you shine a flashlight through it haha.

Thanks bro.

I plan on making the "door a removable panel with magnets. Just gotta figure out what magnets to use haha.

And thanks for thread.. I appreciate it. Definitely looking for some inspiration, as I'm not the best rockscaper.

Thanks guys! I appreciate it!

They call it "Opti-Pure" Glass. But I looked it up and its definitely low iron glass. As far as I know starphire is just a brand.

Only thing I'm scared of is that they say low-iron glass is easier to scratch!

So gotta be extra careful cleaning...

I know 2 places where you can pick them up for about $30.00/no shipping. One on Sunrise Hwy service rd westbound just west of RT, 231 IIRC.
The other is on the eastbound service road of the LIE just east of Oceania street (ex 25)

Thanks Julio!

Planning ahead -- still deciding on how to skin the tank. Not sure if I should use magnets to make door removable because the "door" is HUGE (going to be about 40" wide!). So magnets might not be the most economical way of going about it.

After speaking with Dr. Harry, he brought up the French Cleat system, however I'm figuring out how that would work without having the door expose a gap between frame and the door.

Hopefully it'll be figured out and completed over the weekend. Then gunna spend a few days next week polyurethaning and sanding and polyurethaning and sanding... and (you get the picture). I wanna have a real nice thick "glassy" coat.

Brand new filters for the RO are ordered.
http://www.purewaterclub.com/catalog...roducts_id=315

3 Sediment
2 DI
1 RO

Only thing left is another phosban reactor, because I'm sick of the BRS style ones.
