correct reading of syringe?
I recently bought a hanna alk checker. It seems to work very well but I have some questions about the 1ml syringe. first, the removeable tip seems to suck air as I wasn't able to draw any reagent into it. Figured no big deal, 1ml is 1ml so I tossed it aside. second question, I then relized that there is typically an air bubble in the syringe and other times the syringe is full of reagent without air trapped inside. which way is correct, with an air bubble or with out. If its with, how much liquid is supposed to be injected if it doesn't suck in air, hopefully that makes sense.

Hi, I think that sometimes there will be an air bubble in there, but I think that the syringe is just sucking in reagent, and maybe an air bubble formed. I wouldnt sweat the presence of an air bubble (as long as the tip was fully submerged when you were taking in reagent). Just trust the plunger travel distance (being 1mL) and go with it.
Mine removable tip does not suck in air, is it all the way pushed on? Cheers and good luck |

NeverlosT's response is correct - if you are using the tip, it doesn't matter if there's an air bubbleinthe syringe. As long as the plunger is pulled back to the 1 mL mark, it will dose 1 mL.
If the tip is not used, an air bubble in the syringe will affect the amount of reagent dosed. If your tip does not fit correctly, please send me a PM and I will send you a replacement. Thanks Jessica |

This post answered my question since I was wondering if you got different readings from the plunger or without it.
But my other question is where do you stop filling up the syringe? There are three rings and some kind of "tail" at the end on the black portion of the plunger at the top. Is 10ml measured at the right on the first ring of the black portion (lowest one) or second, or third, or do you pull the plunger to the very top until it stops? Any feedback would be highly appreciated. Thank you! |

I am attaching a close up picture of a syringe that is filled with 10mL of a reagent. This will show you the line you should measure by. Hope this helps! Thanks, Hanna |
