Rebound!

yes, after looking like a dead underwater bonsai, mine suddenly started the long trip back!

I'm very new to this hobby, and this is one of the few things that has turned from misfortune and inexperience to "YEAH! Look at this!"

And tomorrow I go to my first reef club meeting... I'm pumped.

You guys are getting a little carried away.

This is one of the most extreme well engineered tanks I have ever seen. Great job! You just spent a lot of money for me in my future home that I may have to design around a similar tank.

Love the bar built around the tank. Great look and functional too.

Here is a link to my uncle's tank in his office in our shop.

Pure examples that you can really go over the top thinking this stuff out.

http://icemansreef.com/index2.php

The site is not finished yet, but check out the construction. Just as outrageous. There are 6 fully grown men in the tank similar to your wife. 1400 gallons. The coolest part is the creeper fixed on rails for maintenance and no lie (9) 450 W metal halides. I lost count on the other light bulbs. Very similar design on the light fixtures that raise up on an electric hoist.

He is sending me a big box of stony frags. On top of what Richard sent me, I will have a full tank in a short period of time.

Guy's like you give the rest of us goals.

Scott

Thanks, I'm glad you like my stuff!

Yes, that is certainly a stunning tank. You end up with design similarities just by thinking maintenence through carefully. Things like the light lifters...you have to come up with some sort of solution to deal with that or it will kill you later.

My live rock is nicer....(wink)

wow, I read through the entire thread (42+ pages!), and have e-mailed TBS a few times tonight!

I am still trying to find someone to price out an 8'x30"x12" tank for my new home. I only have a quote from 1 company so far.

your tank is great!

96"x 30" x 12"? That's either a grow-out tray...or a flat panel aquarium! What is leading you to that tank size?

I thought the TBS group might like to see updated photos of how things are looking in this tank. At one year old, there is a lot of room for the corals to grow into, but I think things are looking pretty good so far.

The tank actually offers viewing from almost all 4 sides. Here is a sampling of views.

Wow..things have really changed since this last photo! Here's a few updated shots.

Also...tank has received "tank of the month" honours on Canreef. TBS rock is specifically mentioned in the writeup.

Congratulations on TOTM! That is quite an honor. It was educational reading your post concerning your tank.

Please forgive me if this sounds pedantic but thank you for your contribution to the hobby.

Awesome!

Congrats Brad!

What is so cool about your tank is the layout......looks just like the natural ledges here when diving. In the Gulf here we have a lot of sand, and little outcroppings of rock.

So, you are swimming along over sand, then there will be a huge outcropping of rock, with scattered pieces that have broken off during the eons....then more sand.....and more pieces of rock.

And on top of the ledges of rock, are where the gorgonians thrive, as yours are on the big rock. I think you have a most accurate rendition of what the Gulf of Mexico looks like underwater!

Excellent job!

Richard TBS

PS 40 degrees here this morning.coldest day of the year so far.....lets go diving! Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Thanks, Richard! Natural is the look I like.

When it came to placement of rock...I did have a plan, but when the rocks come they clearly had a top and bottom, so there's not much flexibility in their orientation.

After placement, you just have to leave it alone. Let things grow/survive where they want to...rather than where you might like them to. I lost a lot of the sponges that came with the rock, but I'm noticing new sponges have found places where the environment seems right for them.

Untamed,

Your thread was one of the first one's I read when I started this hobby. I really enjoyed it. I even printed parts of it out so I could read it when I had a break at work.

TBS is also an awesome company. I'm local, but found out about them through your thread.

Richard, when are we going diving? This is Mike the Navy guy from Orlando. It's warming up!
