LED spacing

What is the optimal spacing/prefered spacing? I would assume the greater the spacing the better thermal management but want the light to be uniform. (5x11' heatsink for 14 LED's)

They say dont spread no more then 2" so anything below 2"inches apart is good

Most people are around 1-3" apart, but everyone's set-up is slightly different so obviously supplemental lighting would be a lot more spread out than your main lights, etc.
