it's sugar sand

I just got my 40b set up with reef flakes and made a remote DSB with aragasnow... it's beautiful stuff, perfect!

I know its supposed to be "sugar" sized. Does anyone know what the grain size is in mm?

Just ordered 120 lbs to finish filling a 220. Premium has been getting way too much of my money lately, and something tells me I'm not done yet lol.

Anybody know the grain size on the Miniflakes and the Reef Flakes? How much would I need for 1 to 2" max in a 73"x30"?

I have not taken exact grain size measurements, but I'd say the Reef is around 2.5mm, while the Mini is about 1mm in size. Figure these sands at about 75-80lb cu/ft using the sand bed calculator here on RC.

I'm new to this and trying to figure out what would be best. I've read lots of opinions on this sight and seems like there are a wide range. I was thinking two inches?

@mrFly- I'd suggest between 1" and 2". Going with right at about 75lbs is what you would need for 2" depth.

Thanks for all the help. I have one last question, is there a size of the flakes you would recommend ?

Really high flow sps system, or more of a lower flow mixed reef? If it's a high flow sps system then I'd do the Reefflakes. If it's a lower flow system then I would suggest the Miniflakes. If you want to do a DSB, or just like the appearance of a more fine grain sand then the Aragasnow would be the way to go.

Glad to hear you liked it, the Tropic Eden is the nicest and cleanest substrate available on the market, period!

Any pictures? I really like the look of the finer grain sands. Fiji pink to name one. I will be placing an order in the next week if i can get an idea of what i need. this will be an SPS tank. 30x18x21 with 3 mp10's and 300gph return. I've read 2:1 reef to miniflakes is ideal for sps.
would i be able to go the other way around? 2:1 mini to reeflakes?
looking for a 4" DSB. So again, are the reeflakes too big for this? I don't want crap to settle in between the larger grain. is 2.5mm too big for a DSB?

sorry for all the questions. i figure i would need 90lbs.

thanks

There are pictures of the sand on the website. IF you do some looking around on RC I"m sure you can find tank photos of people who have used all TE sand.

For a DSB I would suggest the Aragasnow. The Miniflake is fairly small, but for maximum efficiency of the bed the Aragasnow will work best. The Reefflakes are too big to be used in a DSB.

Is it possible to seed the Tropic Eden sand with some of your "crude bottom mud" or "aquacultured sand"? I want to get the most microfauna and life into this sand but not dump the dirty mud or different colored aquacultured sand directly into the white sandbed.

I was thinking of setting up an internal CPR fuge or an above tank fuge.

Another option would be setting up a screened enclosure on the tank bottom and surrounding the edges with the Tropic Eden sands.

Any other options

Phillip

Reefflakes are going to be out of stock for another 4 weeks or so as of right now.

@Felix, if you know of any resellers in Canada who would like to stock the product please have them contact us directly.
