I'd go with two of the 48 ultra premium kits, what color temperature do you like? That will help determine what ratio of LEDs you should use.
For optics I'd go with 80 degrees on a 20" tall tank. |

For 14k I'd say go with 26 rb/22 cw, or 28 rb/20 cw.

80 degree lenses have the best spread, that's what I'd use for a 20" tall tank. Ideally you'd be about 10-12" off the water.

If you put 24 LEDs on the 48D driver they'll max out at 650mA. For a lot of people that's not bright enough, but it depends on your specific set-up. You can also run the HLG-185-42B driver (2 total is all you'd need) if you don't want 8 drivers.

2:1 is about 17-20k depending on who you ask.
You'll have to wire in parallel instead of series if you're using the HLG driver, so identical/balanced strings are required. |

sorry i hope this is not an weird question but is it better to keep the led together or is it ok to spread them out. i seen tanks that have led every 3 in on an aluminum bar and cool with fans. then there are some that is 24 or 48 led on a small heat sink and raised up high. which would be better to spread it out or keep them together? i have an idea or what i want but which would be better and why? thx.

Each set-up is different, some people have canopies really close to the water so they have to spread the light out while others have the flexibility to hang from their ceiling which means they can put their LEDs really close and allow the light to spread as it comes down. I wouldn't say one is better than the other as long as you have the right number of LEDs and are using the correct/proper lenses.

Typically you'll only use a fuse if you're wiring in parallel, and not in series.

Most people go with 1 or 1.5A, but it has to be fast acting enough to cut power before any damage is done.
