Should I use 1 1/2" pipe for main drain?

So I will be replacing my non drilled 65g with a drilled 65g. Both holds in the NEW drilled 65 gallon are 1" BUT the manufacturers plumbing comes with a fully assembled 1 1/2" durso stand pipe for the main drain. I will be using the Herbie method on this overflow so the return will have to be altered and I may even have to cut down their durso a bit. So I guess my question is would the 1 1/2 drain be too large ? Should I make my own at 1"?

not too large! use it, why bother making smaller one?

That's what I figured too. Also I will be plumbing return over top with a sicce syncra 3.0 pump...the output fitting is 3/4", shoudl I use a reducer to get it to 1" or should I keep the return at 3/4" ?

My drains are 1.5" and return is 3/4" the drain is a lot louder then i thought it would be though could be the size? not really sure on that

I am going with the Herbie overflow method so noise on the drain shouldn't be an issue. I'm still unsure of the return. I dont know if I will go with the 3/4 " or use 1". I want to use 1" because I know you will get more GPH.

Your 1 inch bulkheads are fine. I have a 130 (48x24x26) with two overflows with both returns and drains at 1 inch each. I run a Sedra 20000 (2000 gph at head) as a return pump and the drains handle it with room to spare. I wanted to silence the drains a little so I made my own dursos. It cost about $20 for the pair. The bottom line....your existing holes are fine, especially for a 65......

What I meant robert, was that the tank came with a 1 1/2" premade durso standpipe. I wasn't sure if I should just use that standpipe (cut it down a bit since i'm going Herbie) or completely toss it and use 1" pipe for the drain instead of the 1 1/2"

If your drain is too efficient you will have a really loud drain. I would keep the drain as it is.

So then efficiency would mean the bigger drain would be more efficient right? So go with a 1"?

Just throwing this out there but here is an excerpt from the website of the original designer of Durso:

My tank has a 1 inch bulkhead on the bottom glass where the water drains out. For this size hole, I recommend you use 1¼ inch Schedule 26 PVC for the standpipe. I do not recommend 1½ inch PVC as the larger fittings are much harder to fit inside overflow chamber (also called a weir). Secondly, there is no advantage in 1½ inch over 1¼ inch PVC when dealing with a 1 inch bulkhead — the bulkhead is the limiting factor for the amount of water that can drain out.

These instructions assume you will be constructing a standpipe for a 1 inch threaded bulkhead.

Oh, and when he says to use Schedule 26, just note sch40 works just as good.
