Cyano lights out, what about the clam?

Cyano breakout, thought I'd just go dark for 3 or 4 days. Can my Blue Crocea handle that long in the dark?

How smart is said clam? Do you think you could convince him that a storm blew in and it got cloudy for a couple of days? I think he might buy it.

IMO, I had cyano in my tank before and turned the lights off. 3-4 days later I turned the lights back on and everything looked great. But a week later, it was starting to come back. I dont have an answer about your clam but if your wanting to get rid of the cyano, I would check the parameters. There is a few good articles about cyano on ReefCentral. Good luck

Cyano is there for a reason check for low flow in that area and check your params turning the lights off is just a band aid

+1. Nuisance algae is there due to high nutrients. Turning off the lights will only work for a short period of time, but it will come back shortly.

Had cyano breakout, partly perhaps newer tank, anway lights off did help but came back quickly. Even lowering light time to not over 5 or 6 hours might help. Is a reason this is happening and lots of things cause this, so check the threads.

Easy fix is possibly chemiclean as verify certainly works, some believe it knocks out benefical bacteria advertised it doesn't. Best feature it doesnt hurt the inhabitants, so likely reef safe.

Hope you find the reason as most important for complete cure.

These are all bandaids. It wont permanantly fix the problem. It will come back soon.

because it makes things look pretty, and the owner feels warm and fuzzy inside knowing the problem has gone away.

by the way - 'band aid' is a trademarked brand name. the term you guys are looking for is 'bandage.'

i have used chemiclean red slime remover with 100% success. no harm done to fish, inverts, lps, sps, etc. follow directions EXACTLY as printed on box and all will be good. but you still need to find out why you got the outbreak in the first place, to avoid it coming back.

Cyano is usually caused by high phosphates or at least that was always what caused it for me. I did lights out for 3 days during that time added GFO. When lights came back on it never came back. I refuse to put any chemical treatment for anything in my tank.

Two maxi 400's plugged into the apex and the low flow problem is solved! Cyano literally blew away caught up in the sump sock.
