What do you use to suplemnt calcium and alk? Or does the 20% water change bi weekly handle your load? By the way nice thread and tank. Will be following along.

I run a calcium reactor. I used the mag media in calcium reactor. I still need to drip 240 mm of soda ash mix in a 24 hour period. I buff my water before i add it also.
Mag runs 1400 calcium 425-475 alk 8 to 9

David,
Just read your entire 42 page thread.
I'm very impressed with your tank and the growth of your corals.
Your pictures were the final tipping point of me jumping over to Radions. I now have three over my system, (three seperate tanks and a common sump).

I cant believe you're in St Jo....someday I will have to try and find a way to see your tank in person.....

With a larger system such as yours and the amount of evaporation you have on a daily basis, (you listed 7-12 gallons per day earlier in the thread), what are you doing to protect your house from salt vapor corrosion or humidity damage?
Also, are you having to do anything to maintain your pH what with your sump etc being in the basement, or is having the display upstairs enough to maintain pH for your tank?

My system is completely in the basement and in the summer, with the constant AC use, my pH gets depressed and I have to use a significant amount of Kalk to boost pH up to acceptable levels.

Thanks again for posting your build and the all the info contained within.

Nick

Thank you, Your only 4.5 hours away. Come on up. Take the kids to Worlds of Fun.
I should have an air exchanger but I don't. Salt does not get in the air.
My pH probes have needed calibrated for a long time so I don't watch PH much. As long as I can maintain my Alk between 8-9 there is no reason to worry about PH. I do have to drip Soda Ash. It did take a while to get calcium reactor and soda ash drip dialed in. Now I just check Alk, Mag, and calcium once a week.

Thank you for the kind offer. Someday I'll try to take you up on it.
I didnt used to worry about pH too much until last summer. I noticed some issues with my system even though the Dkh was pushing high 11's and Ca & Mg were fine. Decided to check pH and discovered it was dropping like a rock during the evening in the summer....I've been combating that with the increase in heat this year already.

I'll have to look up Worlds of Fun. I've got a better chance of making a cross state journey if I can bring the kids to something that they'll enjoy more than your tank....

Nick

I have taken my lights way up. 100% with all colors for 6 hours. Lights have been running on this schedule for a few months. I have had great growth and color with my Acros.
My acros have grown a whole lot in 5 months.
I am going to start backing my time down to around 4 hours a day and after that i am going to get my high intensity down to about 75%.
The reason behind this light change is i want a mixed reef. Right now i have to keep all my Chalice's and other LPS corals tucked back in the shade and I can't really enjoy them.
I really think these lights will do both give my SPS growth and color and not bleach my LPS
I have all ready seen fantastic color and growth with my Acros
I will take a month to get my lights turned down.
Later this week I will post a few pics of my tank.

Is it possible to pick just a few lights to turn down........spot lighting so to speak. You could have a few of your units down for LPS and those over the majority of SPS can stay at 100%? I doubt you would be able to see the difference visually. Just a thought.

Yes that is possible if my SPS were all in one area.
I have 12 Radions over a 109x40x27 lights are 8" above water.
So I have plenty of light when lights are set to 100%.
I want to find a happy balance.
The reason I did turn the lights up to 100% was so I could see what these lights were capable of doing.

I experienced the same thing David when it came to keeping acans, the light is just to strong. I may have to set up another LPS / zoas tank.

I think we can find a happy medium. Aco's may not grow as fast but they should color up.

It's very difficult to balanced a real mixed reef tank
My softies hasn't grown in 4 years some even recede some died a horrible death beause the water is too clean ,lights are too strong and flow is too strong.

Have you tried growing SPS at the bottom of your tank 27" down? Curious how the growth / color will be that far from the radions.

Do you notice coralline on the glass much? I heard LEDs produce less algea and thus less work to clean the glass.
