Rinsing PE MYSIS

Hey Reefers!

Is it okay to rinse frozen PE Mysis with RO/DI water instead of tank water?
I use PE Mysis for Saltwater fish.

Does Reef Nutrition Mysis-Feast contain a lot of phosphates? should I rinse that as well?

Thanks!

What's up Irvine

I used to rinse PE mysis 3x a day after soaking to remove that extra juice. Now I keep NPS corals so I don't but I feed the equivalent to 12 cubes a day to my tank.

You want to soak in SW to thaw, rinse with fresh, and then toss in the tank. That way the shrimp sink. I just rinsed with tap water but up here my tap is 10tds out of the faucet. (yet I still have an RODI unit when all my neighbors just run DI, I guess once you live in Irvine you always need the RO)

Cheers.

I used to rinse my frozen food until I read this article, particularly the section titled "Rinsing Foods and the Effect on Phosphate"

http://www.advancedaquarist.com/2012/3/chemistry

It seems to me it just doesn't make that much of a difference. If you want to continue, it definitely won't hurt.

The question to ask is for people rinsing them, what do you hope to accomplish by rinsing them? There may be some reasons that make more sense than others.

I have never rinsed any of frozen foods I've used, and I've used a lot of them. No problem. (beefheart, Prime Reef, mysis, squid, brine shrimp, Emerald Entre, Veggie Delight, bloodworms, etc)

I always thoroughly rinse PE mysis. There's so much fat and oil that comes off when first thawed it'll cloud up your water and kill the skimmer head for hours. It's not so much a problem for Hikari and SF Bay, but PE is much different.

I used to rinse to remove the broken up pieces of shrimp as my seahorses would only eat the fully intact shrimp. With the nutrient load of seahorses any help I could get was needed.

I'm too lazy to thaw and rinse. Now I just throw in the whole cube to watch the fish peck at it.

I use Ocean Nutrition, but it Is not like I've carefully compared it to anything else. I feed it with a pipettesto my fish, mostly to make sure my Chelmon marginalis (a type of copper band butterfly) gets it's share.

IMO, rinsing the food may be a fine idea if the goal is removing things that cause the water to be cloudy, but I do not observe that in my tank.

I feed large amounts of PE and rinse every time. Even with rinsing in RO water my sump will get an oily film from it. After rinsing i store the food in a bottle to soak with tank water and vitamins

Speaking with a PE rep they said not to rinse it since you are just washing away the good stuff as well.

Should I only rinse the PE Mysis with tank water?

I usually don't rinse fish foods, but I am feeding my Naso Blonde Tang with PE Mysis in his Quarantine Tank. No filter feeders, no need to add the extra junk

Hikari always has broken pieces of small size shrimp, so I went ahead and started using PE Mysis.

Thanks guys!

If I were to rinse, I'd use tank water or tap water and not RO/ DI since I think RO/DI may be more inclined to burst cells and release the contents into the rinse water.

I quarter a cube of PE Mysis and rinse each quarter under tap water as needed. No problems so far.

I never rinse my PE mysis. My corals love the cloudy stuff squirted on their polyps.
