Lightning clownfish babies.
http://www.lightning-maroon-clownfish.com/
I hope I can post this link. I'm sure some of you have already seen this but it's too cool not to share. I've been following for a while and waiting to see this.

They have been out for about a year now. Very expensive.

I didn't know you could get them? I thought this was the only one in captivity. Guess I wasn't following that close huh?

There is only one known LMC in captivity as of right now. This was the first successful hatch and it started with about 310 babies. If you read through Matt's entire history on his site he goes into great detail on the ups and downs of keeping the Lightning healthy and having a successful spawn. I've been following since he started the site and check in a few times a week to get my fix on the progress of the babies. They should be morphing any day now and I can't wait to start seeing some color on the fry!

They don't run anything just yet. There have only been 2 wild caught, and this is the only one in captivity right now. The F1 fry are only just beginning to morph with luck in the next couple of days. It will probably be a while yet before he knows if any will actually inherit and show the "Lightning" pattern. Please read Matt's site. It's fascinating!

Not yet. As I understand it now, the idea is to see what kind of success Matt has with this female. If attempts are unsuccessful (not sure how many) then I believe there is plans to go back and obtain a couple of Juveniles from the PNG site that this female was retrieved. Apparently there are more, but my guess is that it is difficult to get to them wherever they are. I'm sure more googling can get answers on that. Either way, it's a great thing to watch develop!

Of course that price is purely just a speculation and guess on my part. I have no "insider" information! Just a lot of hope for the successful continuation of the project

I've never heard or seen anything about another being caught and sold anywhere. Only that there were two originally obtained from PNG. One died, the other obviously is being kept by Matt Pedersen. If there is another that was recently sold for 1200 there is no paper trail of it that I could find. If you have info I'd love to read about it! I'd imagine if one was even caught, much less sold, there'd be a lot more hype about it and Matt as well as hundreds or even thousands of others would be talking about it. |

I didn't purchase it at the wholesaler in LA so I can't really tell you anything about it. And as for papertrail I am pretty sure they aren't coughing that over. And it was wild caught. The thing with these "lightening bolts" is that its a mutation. Beyond the actual patterning mutation that this fish is going through the gene that causes it most likely causes other issues with the fish. Hence the puldging eye on the current one alive and the fact that out of 300 eggs, 1 survived and most likely will grow to be normal.
I used to do research at the UA on fruit flies and Fragile X mental retardation protein and how it effects patterning and germ cell proliferation. The concepts in that project apply here. A protein called "cbl" controlled how the flies patterning as it grew and when you mutated it it appeared differently but however its life expectancy was much shorter. Its also like these snowflake clowns that are beautiful but giant genetic mutations and massive inbreeding. They are still fairly young and we don't know how OLD they will get. But I hope it all works out and that we can get them into the local fish community! I would love to have something that unique

I was just pointing it out. Wasn't meant to be an argument to your point.

Cool clown, but I don't think I would be able to put up with a maroons personality. I think I rather house a piranha
