epoxy stick

are there any that I can get at Home Depot or Lowes that are reef safe or do I need to use the expensive ones at the LFS?

After a quick google search it seems that many people have had luck using the cheaper stuff. The only drawback seems to be that your skimmer will go crazy for a few days. Me personally, I'll spend a few extra bucks for the reef epoxy. I've got too much invested in corals.

I think I've answered this question a million times it feels like. Use JB Waterweld. It's completely reef safe. I use it for all my frags as well as my aqua scapes that have many bends, curves, and oddly stacked rocks. It's the only thing I'll ever recommend or use. It's 5.50 a stick at Home Depot or Lowes. I use it in combination of Super Glue Gel.

Even with the reef stuff your skimmer still goes crazy. The main thing is to do a little at a time to keep the skimmer from going haywire, the other thing to consider is when the epoxy cures underwater it uses available oxygen to do so and can suffocate fish and even inverts like crabs, shrimp and snails. Now when doing any epoxy of more than just a small ball I add an airstone for a couple days as well (and try not to add a bunch if possible). JB Water Weld and SteelStick are both drinking/potable water safe and I have used each as well as the "reef stuff" and really don't see a difference although the TLF I have been using in the pinkish/purple color is a lot easier on the eyes.

I use "Stone Mason" brand "Floor patch and leveler cement". It does harden under water and it encrusts much faster on than on any kind of epoxy I ever used. This is not an epoxy, it is a powder that you have to mix with some water to get a modeling clay consistency. IMO is better than KZ (Zeovit) "Speed Glue".

I use mighty putty. It's great and ive never had a problem. I've also used the water weld brand and I'm currently using a two part that looks like pink coraline. I can't remember what it is but I got it off marine depot.
