Not sure where you see a compression fitting? If you mean the bulkhead on the drain, thats a filter sock holder and a bulkhead. It's just how they did it.

Unless you mean on the ball valve(only compression fitting I see)? And yes I don't see any way to install them incorrectly.
Mine is plumbed(from left to right) main siphon drain > return > emergency. Everything is 1" schedule 80 pvc with spears gate valves, and cpex ball valves.

Thats actually a picture of my sump from previous in the thread. there is plenty of room in my sump for drain down, even for emptying the overflow with room to spare.

Sorry got the names of my parts wrong. I meant in between the bulkheads at the bottom of the tank and the unions. Also which side did you place the nut of the union? Top or bottom? Hope that makes more sense

Ahh I got you now.....

No those are just different bulkheads then what is shipped with the tank. The ones that come with the tank are ABS plastic and kind if thin IMO. I ordered schedule 80 PVC bulkheads from BRS. I also preferred to have a screw in bulkhead as opposed to a glue in. If I need to replace a bulkhead, I only have to replace the bulkhead, not the bulkhead and adjoining pipe if they were glued in.

I actually did my unions so the part with the nut is on the tank(top). When I unscrew a bulkhead I don't have to try and hold the nut and the pipe at the same time(it slides down the pipe). It's all just personal preference on that one. Plus if you go buy normal righty tighty rule, thats how you would have to install them.

Oh ok. Yeah I was looking at the PVC bulkheads but decided to replace the ones that came with the tank with the ABS ones that BRS sells. They are definitely better. Thanks

If it were a glue in, you would have to replace the bulkhead, pipe, and union no matter which part went bad.

Not in my opinion. Not fine enough especially if you want to tumble things. Plus having Val e there will allow you to turn it on or off and disconnect at fitting.

If I use one of the pipe adaptors Homer linked to above then could I modify it later to add a 1/2" gate valve? Thread it into the bushing and cement it in the other end

I would personally use spa flex and plumb return. You lose a lot with barb fittings. Also prefer gate on return. You will likely have to dial back return pump and it will change as your reactor clogs. A ball valve there is going to frustrate you

Copied what I saw BRS do on the 160 build with the ball valve.

BRS 160 is running a bean animal so doesn't need as tuned as herbie.

Spa flex glues to pvc fittings same as pipe but since it is not rigid it dampens the vibrations and noise same as vinyl but without the head loss

One more question.I am trying to understand why herbie needs to be tuned more than bean. My understanding was that they are very similar systems other than bean has the third emergency drain. Don't see how this affects fine tuning the system

Bean has the third emergency so you can allow water to run in the second more so then with herbie. You need the emergency to have a trickle at most and as such it is a bit more fickle to tune to keep stable

Skip the spa flex and look for ultra flex. It should be sold in any pool store.

Spa flex is somewhat flexible and will work for our application, but I found ultra flex and it has the same capabilities of spa flex with the addition of it being more flexible.

Anyways.....

Went to the LFS last night for an acan I saw on their new website. Unfortunatly it was sold, but he did have a little war paint scoly that was from a tank rescue. I've been eyeing it in their frag tank for a couple months now. Originally it was not for sale, but I finally convinced him to let me have it. When I first saw it the porr thing was in rough shape. It had receded quite a bit, and did not look healthy at all. Well fast forward a month or so, and when I was eyeing yesterday it was fully healed up and back to growing. Well it's now in my tank and at an absolutely great price, FREE!!

You can see from the pic how big it originally was and how much it receded. Looking quite good and healthy now.

I did pick up a nice rainbow acan, but some d*ckhead knocked the frag plug over so I couldn't get a pic of it yet.

I was pretty stoked when he just threw it in. It would probably be a 200$ coral if it was full size. probably 100$ as is.

Its about 3" across as is, 4 to 5" before it receded.
