Are you drilling the bottom glass? Make sure it’s not tempered.

If you are doing bean do not drill the bottom but the back instead..
and yes even in a 40b I would still use a bean setup... (that my preference.. I wouldn't ever do a tank with a herbie or durso or whatever.. bean is the ONLY way to fly IMO) and I would drill them at least a hole diameter apart (not center to center but edge to edge) so there should be 1.75" of glass (or more) between each hole.. and I would still use 1" bulkheads (1.75" holes) for the return if not doing an over the top return which doesn't require bulkheads..

It’s not bad necessarily, it just takes up more room in your DT than a ghost style Beananimal would.

I had a 40 Breeder with the internal box and bean animal setup. It does take up some space which is a downfall but this setup will give you piece of mind and when tuned right it’s dead silent. You can also do a ghost style overflow with a external box setup as the bean animal, eshopps and I believe synergy sell them as a kit with the holesaw bit and a template to drill by.

I agree with McGyver. I would drill 3 1.75” holes for the drains for 1” bulkheads & use a 3/4” threaded bulkhead for the return. If U use a 3/4” threaded bulkhead for the return u will be setup for locline if that is the route u choose. The locline adapter will screw straight into the bulkhead, so u won’t have any adapters u will have to use.
That is how my 40 breeder is setup. A internal overflow box that I made 28” long, 3- 1” drains for a beananimal drain & I have a 3/4” return drilled on each end of the tank. That is why I only made the overflow 28” long is so I had 4” on both ends for the returns. As far as hole placement, I drilled the drains 1.75” from the top of the glass to the top of the hole & left 2” inbetween holes. I stayed the minimum recommended distance from the top of the tank because I wanted the overflow box as small as possible. The lower u drill the holes the taller the overflow box will have to be. Drilling the holes where I did I ended up having to make the box 28” long, 4” tall & 3” wide. I also used smoked glass & schedule 80 90’s inside of the overflow to make it less noticeable. The sch 80 is grey instead of white. Here is a photo, it really isn’t that noticeable |

Btw, if u prefer a ghost type overflow like the modular marine they don’t really take up anymore space then if u did a interior box. In fact, u can probably get it a little closer to the wall with something like a modular marine overflow. With a interior box the plumbing comes out of the back of the tank. So with the plumbing u really can’t get the tank closer then 6” to 7” from the wall. The ghost overflows the plumbing comes out of the bottom of the box, so it only has to be able to fit the box inbetween the tank & the wall & most of those boxes are between 4 & 5”. So u may actually save 1 or 2” with the ghost overflow

I rune beananimal on all of my tanks, I think they are easy to adjust and on my set up it is very quiet, but I am only having a flow of 400 gal/hour
