Made myself a new sump

As most of you know I was the acrylics guy for a long time for our club and beyond. I got bored and switched to making wood furniture and things for fun. Now I have the itch again to make sumps, filters, reactors and whatever else I can come up with but just bonding acrylic together is not enough any more. I made this bad boy out of 1/2” PVC and acrylic inlaid windows.

Do you use Weld On 1001 to bond the two materials together? I remember the first time I made a calcium reactor I used the wrong glue and spider cracked the acrylic. I have been looking at the Red Sea, Geo and Deltec sumps for ideas. Need to call Regal Plastics for a quote. Great idea on the white PVC versus white acrylic. I assume it’s cheaper.

Thanks!

I got it from a wholesaler. It’s very dense and heavy compared to everything else I found.

I mix my own chemicals. It’s mostly methylene chloride and some thickener. 100 to 5 ratio. This actually melts the two plastics together like weld on instead of just flying them.

There are many reasons for crazing. The most common are because the use of alcohol based bonding agents or because the edges were overheated when cutting.

I think we were all hoping it was a basic pvc 1/2” sheet from Maynard’s

https://www.menards.com/main/buildin...0903720728.htm

Sounds like no such luck.

It’s definitely not that stuff. I tried something similar Home Depot caries but it was too soft and flimsy for sumps or anything that needs to hold water. However, my entire stand and hood skin is made from that Home Depot stuff. It’s awesome for that kind of thing as it’s light and easy to machine with basic tools.

Yeah never seen that pvc seen it in person. I think I’ll make mine out of white acrylic from Regal Plastics. Should be able to get away with 3/8”.

16”x16”x48”. I want to design it to use a roller filter, the Theiling is on sale so maybe that one. Clear front and white everywhere else. I have some 1/2” clear so I may use that for some of the baffles. I have about 10 feet by 18” by 39” to fit everything under the tank. Got a quote on a 150 long today for the tank.

I’ll send you a PM with my number. Depending on the design you may be able to get away with 1/4”. I can do the math for you to make sure but I need more detail.
