One more interesting fact about this reef: corals spawned there, and there are lots of tiny offsprings everywhere in his rocks. Very cute! I missed to picture them (one more reason for another visit... ;-)).

My name is Carlos Moreno, I am registered Carlinhos Moreno since 2004.
I am 56 years old, and I started in the hobby since I was a child. Started 25 years ago with marine aquarium and this current one is up for one and a half year. About the Baffles that some people already asked about. The baffles has 180x60x40cm ( 71 x 24 X 16), its function is to decant particles, so that a great part of them does not arrive to the RDSB. I clean it monthly, and as the tank does not have sand, and it has pumps that moves the water under the rocks, almost all the dirt goes down passes through the baffles before the skimmer and is restrained in there. The filter socks that some people asked about , helps to hold back the small particles that are in the water of the aquarium. Those buckets that were shown in the right back coorner, are the filter socks support. It is 85cm ( 34 ") height, and a 5000 lph pump ( 1320 GPA) in a close loop under the rocks that is responsible to feed the filter socks. Filter socks is changed every 10 days. Temperature control. Three fans placed one in each RDSB box at the sump are responsible to keep the temperature ate the right place and are controlled by a digital thermostat. The Sump The sump is made by three plastic boxes of 180 liters each ( 48 gallons) , inside the first two ones, there are four RDSB boxes ( 16 x 12 x 8 ) , two on each one filled with samoa pink sand #1. In the future, the plan is to remove one of the RDSB at the time to clean and not implact the aquarium biology. In the third box are the calcium reactors , return pumps, UV, and fresh water top-off using gravity system. At the beggining I used vodka to fight briopsis algae , am not using anymore. I fed for some time the corals with pro-coral zooton, but I had problems with coral spawning and stopped using it. At the moment I am not using any additives in the tank. Over the baffle tank, I set a small aquarium that I call the satelliteaquarim. I put some of the corals that had grown to much in the main tank. It's feed by a 1200 lph pump ( 317 gph) that pump the water at the end of the baffle tank and return the water to the beginning of the baffle tank. Thanks for every comment and question about my tank I received. I will be happy to answer any question that you might have. Carlinhos Moreno. |

Wow simply amazing and some of the unique ways of getting the detritus out of the display tank. I just wish I were closer to look at this in person. Your previous tank was nice too. Did you just upgrade that to the current one?

The best way I’ve found to the detritus doesn’t accumulate on the tank was build it with RDSB (in the Sump), a special rock building that avoid the detritus to become accumulated, the Decanter and the Shakbag that remove the display detritus too. This tank is not an upgrade of the old tank, this is a new structure. Regards, Carlinhos. |

Fantastic system Carlinhos!
Please tell us about how you feed the system. What kind of food, how much, and how often?

Carlos this is not just the best from Brazil, it is one of the best reef aquariums I have ever seen. The colors of the corals are amazing, jeje no Zeovit or ULN systems.
What is amazing is the simple setup and very different from what we see every day. You said that you stop feeding the corals because of the spawning but are you feeding nothing? What are you feeding to the fish? I see the calcium reactor inside the sump! This is the first time I see that. Is it difficult to clean the sharkbag? It seems that its not easy. Hope to see this tank as tank of the month some day. Congratulations on such an amazing tank.
