Thanks for the link elijaher but there is nothing in Sunny's thread to indicate the Procolor cause the diatom (I'm not saying it's not possible with a different color spectrum) but red slime is a different matter all together...

Can't believe I missed the beginning of this thread! So glad to see you back, Ed! I didn't think you could stay away.

Looks like I'm gonna learn some more! OK - I've pulled up my most comfortable chair, popped open a beer - bring it on ....

Very nice plan here Ed. This is going to be an awesome build. Hopefully you dont give us another "Sopranos ending" on this one, where we dont know the conclusion lol. Glad to see you back (I figured it wouldnt be long, thats why I didnt acknowledge the closing of your other thread lol).

No problem bro.... that's the beauty of this forums as we are always learning form one another...!!

Still yet to figure out the photoperiod but was kind of hoping to keep my MH on a lot shorter - need to find ways to save some $$ on difficult times like this

Thanks - hopefully no 'Sopranos' ending here (unless I get transfer to another city, which at this point in time, seem unlikely - not for the next 12 months anyway)

Thumbs up TANK ORDERED

OK, some fun story to get everyone’s day started…!!

So, the adventure begins……..

Yesterday afternoon took some freshly baked pastries from the hotel (to sweeten the deal) and went to see my tank maker (the same tank maker that made my previous tank) and give him the dimension of my new tank as below.

Tank maker: “waaa…you again yaaa? Wat you wan”
EdReef: “I want to make a new tank and here’s my dimension”

Tank maker: Took a look at the plan and says “you wanna keep fresh water turtles?”
EdReef: “errr….no….no….no, it’s for a salt water reef”

Tank maker: Shakes his head and says “hmmmmm….bad!!”
EdReef: Eyes wide open “what do you mean bad??”

Tank maker: “bad bad fungshui”
EdReef: “err you mean making a tank so shallow is bad fungshui?”

Tank maker: “no…no…no….” bringing out his measuring tape and pointing to my measurements with Chinese inscription written on each measurement “see…..bad”
EdReef: As I don’t read Chinese I ask my secretary to translate but somehow I still could not really catch the meaning so I ask him “so, what’s your suggestion?”

Tank maker: opening up his arms “make bigger….”
EdReef: “huh?? BIGGER” - the sly smile coming onto my face

Tank maker: “yeah, to here is gud ….” pointing to a new measurement

Anyway, somehow I ended up with a measurement of L: 176cm x W: 106cm x H: 40cm, which visually is not bad as I actually tape down the measurement he recommended on the flooring of his workshop.

So now my reef is UPGRADE from 169-g to 193-g (see how fungshui can be used as an good excuse to go bigger…)

FWIW, for those who believe in fungshui, there is this special measuring tape (one side is metric/other side imperial measurement) and there is wordings on each measurement which will tell you if it’s good or bad so the overall length/ height/ width have to be good. – guess we never stop learning……!!

Anyway, for those who are interested, below is a picture of how the measuring tape looks like….

So now my tank conform to good fungshui = wifey happy !!
Upgrade bigger than originally planned = me extremely happy !!

This tank is off to a good start!!

Hahahahaa… anyway, it should take about 2 weeks to arrive, hopefully and another week to cure.

For those who are wondering, I opt for clear silicon instead of black as I think it will give the tank an overall much cleaner look and make it look bigger too…

Now to find someone to make my stand, which is going to be another challenge with the new odd dimension…..??

Ed,

Try a vinegar soak to clean the probes and a medium bristle tooth brush, should come right off.

This tank build will have TOTM written all over it. Good luck and have fun.

Thanks Clint - I will try that. Can't remember but i seem to recall somewhere that GHL probes are not advisable to do vinegar soak?? I could be wrong thou!!

As for TOTM, not too sure as shallow tanks never get nominated!! Besides, there are lot's of great shallow tanks around here in RC but thank you anyway for thinking so....

Hey guys....just wanted to share!!

For those who is not aware, there is a thread in the DYI forum called Free Sketchup Renderings *inquire within* started by WZHANG and I posted my ugly tank drawings there and this is what WZHANG came out with...

and he also gave me another option for design...

And this is what uncleof6 did for my tank...

Amazing how lifelike the rendering drawings are??

Those guys are great and really a BIG HELP to people like me who's simply hopeless in Google Sketchup....

MY TANK IS ALIVE.......

Gorgeous, Ed! I absolute love the clean, modern lines. The canopy design will be perfect for the LumenBrights.

BTW: great story about your dealings with the "tank maker".

I really like that second rendering, with the floating reef. You still have that rimless look, but dont have to worry about seeing all of the lighting equipment. Those guys sure have some skills.

Coming from you Tom, I'm honored....like getting TOTM twice... Agree the canopy design looks great for the LB but only problem is to completely have the LB hidden, it will have to be thicker than that and I'm not sure if by doing so the top will look too heavy...if you know what I mean??

Originally I never even think of doing a floating canopy but now this has make me rethink my plans....
