Good or Bad???

I have a rock in my holding tank that has a few of these on it, I'm leaning towards bad?

Seems to be a little different than the usually Aptaisa, but is this what it is?

majano anemone of some type. They will spread rapidly and they move all around the tank. I would juice them with some kalkwasser or joes juice. If that fails, I have used a pair of bone cutters to clip off the bit of rock they are attached to.

Thanks for the feed back, I won't be putting this rock in my new tank.

I have not noticed any on the other pieces of rock and will have to hope for the best.

I will setup a 20 gallon with this rock to learn how to defeat them, if I end up with them in my 120. It will give me a more controlled environment to try different things

Now that I know what they are called I did a search and found this post on them.

Majanos From Hell

What happens if you try to pull them off the rock?

I have three in my tank but wasn't sure if I wanted to remove them or not.

might read some of the other threads here on RC

some veteran reefers have ended up having to tear down their entire systems and cook the rock to rid themselves of these pests... i recently removed about 40# of LR (out of over 200# - as well as threw out some zoanthid rocks) from my tank and bleached it then dried it in the sun... it wasnt worth the risk to me... and the LR will become live again in no time when i add it back.

I've heard you can pull the rock out of the water and and torch them with a lighter, kills everthing where the torch hits but the majano's are toast

They grow back. Use any sort of alk additive on them.

I had a couple of majanos in my tank. I Joe's Juiced them and haven't had any come back or any negative issues arise. It was so incredibly easy and painless. I turned off my powerheads and put a couple of drops of the Joe's Juice just above their mouths and they ate them like candy and then dissolved. I would highly recommend this method over tearing a bunch of rock out of your tank and making a huge mess. I would much rather have a wet arm than a wet floor. Good luck.

I read of a kinda low tech approach somewhere on these forums so I tried it. Basically I took a small piece of rubble and placed it on top of one of them. The manjo kinda transfered over to it and then I took it out of the tank. I let that darn thing sit on my bathroom sink for over 2 days, it took that long to completely dry the thing out... wow. I'm going to try the same approach on the other two./
