Acropora Propagation Project in Maldives

Check this out. It is really neat how they are creating this new coral reef.

I love the idea, and I saved the growth shots. I saw some stuff like this in the Perhentian Islands in Malaysia when I went there too. Cool stuff.

The growth is amazing. I also think it's interesting how they attach the coral horizontally with zip ties... I have heard that attaching frags horizontally could encourage a more rapid vertical growth as well as more multi-branching. Interesting.

I would actually bother with buying frags if I could have that kind of growth...

That's really great. I think this needs to happen in many more places to help not only repair natural reefs, but perhaps even help supply the hobby with maricultured frags.
Anything we can do to alleviate the stress on the natural reef is very worthwhile!

As I understand it, mounting them horizontally will allow for maximum surface area to face the light. This, in turn, increases the utilization of energy by the coral, promoting faster growth. It seems pretty amazing; if a piece of acro is knocked over in the wild, the odds of it landing on its side are greater than landing vertically. I hope that makes sense.

I thought about glueing me a matrix of plastic sticks together to mimic those to see how it would turn out....
