Talking New 112g Cube 36x36x20 (pic intense) Journal

I picked up my new 112 gallon 36"x 36"x20" cube and sump 30"x20"x17" (lxwxh) on Monday, . I will need as much help as possible from RC members to keep me from making stupid mistakes in the process of setting this up , so all input is appreciated! Also, special thanks to Mikedege for letting me use his sump plans and Rommel at Ultimatefrags.com for recommending WMS!

Here are some pics:

What is the thickness of the main tank?

Great Dimensions. Good Luck, I'll be following along.

That tank is going to be awesome. I have a 24" x 24" x 16" cube with an external overflow.

I would get several nanostreams for that tank.

I am going to watch this build. It will be sweet!

Main tank thickness is 3/4"

JmLee:

The sump was custom built by World Marine Systems in San Jose, CA, however, the design belongs to Mikedege (from RC), thanks again Mike!

3D model of what I think the set-up will look like I'm no graphic designer so be nice ! P.S. To the best of my abilities, everything is drawn to actual dimensions and scale...

Front view:

Right side:

Left Side:

Back:

Top:

Metal Stand:

I need some folks to shoot some holes in the set-up and let me know what they would do differently. My main concerns at this point are:

* Is my tank stand going to be able to hold my 900+lbs of weight and is it overbuilt?

* Would you place the lighting differently?

Also, thanks all for the kind words and help!

I will start building the tank stand this weekend so please give me some input on the build:

It will be 1.25-1.5" square hollow steel and the diagram appears in my previous post. Let me know if you need more info, thanks! Also, I am planning to coat the metal with http://www.por15.com/ (thanks BruiseAndy).

Alright, I want to drill the tank today but, I need some input on the placement of the holes--this is what I had in mind:

This shows the flow idea and placement of holes (top down):

This shows the distance of the front CL holes from the edges of the tank:

This shows the backside of the tank including measurements:

Keep in mind my tank is braceless, so my main concerns are:

* Will my sequence (5000gph) make my tank over flow from the movement with my current placement of holes?

* Will 2 (3/4") holes do the same job as a 1.5" hole in terms of feeding my sequence CL system? I am thinking of doing it this way because I read from another post that it would reduce the chances of a critter getting cought by the suction...

* Is there a different placement that would help me achieve better flow and less dead spots?

Addl Info:
-Closed loop holes will be drilled for 1" bulkheads
-Closed loop feed will be drilled for 3/4" bulkheads
-Return holes will be for 3/4" bulkheads
-Drain will be drilled for 1.5" bulkheads (x2)

If you see anything wrong with what I am planning please let me know... Once I drill there's no going back, gulp. Thanks, Eli

Your vision is perfect ! I want to start drilling today, got any advice since your tank is almost the same dimensions? What would you do differently on your tank and what would you keep the same?

your pump will not overflow your tank if you drill at those locations..however, if you move your holes closer to the top of the tank, the waves will jump over the side being your tank isnt eurobraced....

to answer your next question...two 3/4" holes do NOT provide the same cross sectional area as one 1.5" hole...you would need four 3/4" holes to equal one 1.5" hole.

on my tank, i have a hole drilled in each corner of my eurobracing and then i have one drilled at the midpoint of each side on the bottom. if i were to do it again, id leave the top the same but move the bottom holes to the corner as well.

if you havent seen my build thread, you can find it here..

Thanks sabodish . I hope you don't mind me asking if 2 1" holes will provide enough cross sectional area as one 1.5". I am trying to limit drilling only 2 drain holes for the CL but, I don't want to use only one 1.5" because of the suction. Thanks, Sabodish!

Also, for future reference how do you calculate this?

em..its just straigh math...the cross sectional area of a pipe is:

(pi*D^2)/4

calculate the cross sectional area of one 1.5" pipe and then the cross sectional area of one 3/4" pipe. then divide it out and see how many 3/4" pipes you need to equal the 1.5".

two 1" pipes will have 1.57 in2 where one 1.5" will have 1.76 in2.
you are real close i dont think id worry too much about the difference there.

Smile Update

Update:

Painted the back a smooth black (I even threw in a few drips):

PREP

PAINT

Also got the holes drilled in, I ended up changing the diameter of the CL feed holes to 1.5" each just to be sure the pump would not get choked out:

BOTTOM FRONT HOLES

ATTN: DO NOT BUY THESE POWERSTRIPS!!

I bought 2 of them & proceeded to throw them in the trash 3 days later............................Problem you ask??

Yes, the receptacles are very poorly made & do not hold the plugs progs tight at all. I walked by & bumped the cord of my return pump & it shut off. I wiggled the plug & it turned back on. Can you imagine if the cat bumped the plug 5 minutes after I left for work for my 10 hour day? Yep, I'd come home to a tank full of dead fish.

I opened up the powerstrip to see if I could mod it because I just spent $35 & no use wasting it.

All wires are crimped on, not soldered, & 80% of them were very loosely connected. The plugs looked like something I'd buy at Toys R Us. I ended up throwing them away.

Spend a few more dollars & get these...............http://www.guitarcenter.com/shop/pro..._sku=100313636

Outside looks the same, but trust me, inside it's the difference between a Mercedes & a Yugo. I've ran both of mine for well over a year w/ no problems..................

Steve

I've got a couple of the American DJ PC-100A 8ch power centers. There are high quality! You can get them on ebay for $16. Hy Tech or something like that.

GO COLTS!!!!

I would rethink the SCWD, I have one and with in 6months it stopped switching and only comes out one side. I took it off to clean and still is broke. I did see a MOD to fix it but, never tried it. I would go with one outlet with a sea swirl.
