Reef Shots. The COMAS Photo of the month Competition.
Reef Shots, the COMAS Photo of the Month Contest, open to all members of COMAS.
Each month an anouncement is made that we are accepting submissions for the POTM contest. We will also give the deadlines for submission (pictures received after the deadline are automatically enetered in the next months competition). At that time, any interested members can submit a single photo of their choice to the COMAS Reef Shots Coordinator via email (comaspotm@gmail.com). The submitted photos will be collated and posted on a page on our website and voting is opened up in a thread on reefcentral, and a deadline will be given for the voting. At the next meeting after the voting has closed, the winner will receive a prize (usually a $25 gift certificate from any of the COMAS sponsoring stores). At the end of the year, we select various submitted pictures that are of sufficiently high resolution and create the COMAS Reef Shots calendar for the next year. Reef Shots, the COMAS Photo of the Month contest is inclusive of all things related to our Marine Aquariums. So send us those pics of worms and fish and corals and anything else that looks great. The rules are simple. YOU must have taken the picture. It must be of YOUR tank or that of another members tank. (i.e, no public aquariums or non-members tanks). Entries from commercial vendors who are COMAS members are accepted, but the prize is awarded to the second place (non-commercial) entry. In the event an individual wins twice consecutively, the prize is awarded to the second place. In the event the first and second highest votes are within 20% of each other, a run off vote may take place at the Reefshots Coordinators discretion. Also, please note that by submitting a picture you are giving COMAS the right to use your image in the calendar and or any other materials we produce. Photo Taking & Submission Tips: First, check out Ximina's Photography Lessons. http://www.ximinasphotography.com/lessons/index.html Ximina is both a professional photographer and a reefkeeper, so his lessons are targeted at the marine aquarium hobbiest. And the lessons cover the full spectrum of topics, everything from taking the pics in the first place to post processing the resultant pics in photoshop. His site truely has some amazing stuff for us! Secondly, check out these tips, some specific to the COMAS Reef Shots program. Submit the originally sized photo to the contest. We will resize it as needed for the website, etc. We need the original in case you win and it ends up in the calender. Just a little bit of tweaking in Adobe Photoshop or the Gimp can correct color & white balance problems in your picture. This sort of image tweaking is a good thing. Turn off the feature in your camera that prints dates on the picture. Submit the original picture to us at comaspotm@gmail.com Pictures are now being accepted for the January competition. Submission deadline is JAN 25 at MIDNIGHT. Images sent for the December 2007 contest will be included in this round. Finally check out the Reef Shots Archive 2006- http://reefshots.mycomas.com/viewyear-2006.php 2007- http://reefshots.mycomas.com/viewyear-2007.php Thanks, paul.
