As a newer user of Tropic Marine Pro Reef, I find the numbers pretty disturbing. I can tell you from testing a new batch of water last night, I have the "left" sample on the charts (400 calc, 1000 mag, 6-7 dKH, etc). Mine is from a bucket.

1000 magnesium in one batch, 1600 in another? Either their containers are NOT AT ALL mixed well, or their manufacturing/processing/quality is way off!

"Two samples of each salt were purchased in December 2007, one each from different distributors. We chose distributors from geographically distant locations to increase the chances of seeing samples from different manufacturing runs. The only exceptions were Crystal Sea, Crystal Sea Bioassay, and Marine Environment, of which we were only able to obtain samples from a single
source."

you mean they got 2 "bad" buckets..

My thoughts exactly. PO4 readings on IO were pretty bad IMO.

i think its great that they showed to what level a measured amount of salt added to a measured amount of water will bring the SG to but i think that after that they should have raised all salts to NSW before doing the rest of the tests.

Eww, yeah. You're right King-Kong. Neither one was particularly impressive was it.

Thats all my lfs sells. He's in love with the stuff.

mb, simple conversions will get those results. I'm working on that now.

Example.

Secheam Reef reported 469.5 calcium at 30 ppt.
469.5 div by 30 = 15.65 x 5 = 78.25

469.5 plus 78.25 = 547.75

Hey Howard. Do you remember what I reported this salt to be for calcium at 35 ppt ?

I suspect for calcium and magnesium it is.

I don't think it will work for any other test.

Fish stores get great deals from vendors to sell their product. What they sell may simply give them the greatest profit margin.

Well,

Thanks DrBegalke and AWT!

And thanks ahead of time to Billybeau1 for calculating 35ppt corrected numbers! I look forward to looking at the salinity corrected numbers and re-evaluating which salt I will choose at that point.

James

Very interesting, but all the colored bars almost gave me a seizure. I got an idea of what the good and bad are, but is there a statistics guru here who can determine what the "best" one was? Be sure to give major point deductions for Phosphate and Nitrite. Looked to me like Red Sea Coral Pro consistently ranked well.(?)

Awesome, I am glad they didn't test the salt that they distribute themselves..................of course that makes this a boring thread for a couple folks, but they made the right call for sure!

Thanks AWT for taking the time and money to do this test for us!

These are the calcium numbers I came up with bumping each mix to 35 ppt. I'll also show what I got in my own testing. I'll do magnesium tommorrow.

Instant Ocean
AWT - 432 - they actually got two very different readings from 2 different buckets.
My test - 350

Reef Crystals
AWT - 385
My test 420 (I think they got a couple of the bad batches going around lately.)

Coralife
AWT - 528
My test - 560

Kent
AWT - 500
My test - 540

Red Sea Coral Pro
AWT - 420
My Test - 490

Crystal Sea Marine Mix
AWT - 316
Did not test

Crystal Sea Bioassay
AWT - 336
Did not test

Marine Environment
AWT - 660
Did not test

Tropic Marin
AWT - 309
My test - 375

TM Pro Reef
AWT - 380
My test - 450

Oceanic
AWT - 531
My Test 580

Seachem Marine
AWT - 535
My test - 500

Seachem Reef
AWT - 548
My test - 540

I also tested Red Sea regular which came in at 400, Oceanpure came in at 510 and Aquatic Gardens was 430.
