240 cube stand underway.
My 240 cube, 4'x4'x2'tall, will be ready in a couple of weeks. I started the stand tonight and got the framing almost complete. I'll be adding some 3/4 inch plywood to the top and bottom tomorrow night and start the finish work as well. This stand will allow for 3 side access via 28"x36" openings. If anyone sees something I missed, please let me know. I'll post pics as I move along.

Is the tank glass or acrylic? If acrylic, you might want to beef up the runners in the middle so it doesn't sag over time. I'd probably double those 2x4s, and consider sandwiching a strip of plywood between them (take a look at my stand construction pics in my gallery if this isn't clear). You have more than enough vertical posts for the weight of the tank.

I haven't had hardly any time this week to work on this stand, but I did manage to get a couple of fairly productive hours in last night. I have begun the work on the corner columns and have faced the openings. I'll hopefully finish the columns tonight and begin the crown and base.
I'm using birch and A-grade pine since they stain up almost identically. I will be using red mahogany stain.

Not much progress tonight thanks to a 5 alarm migraine. This is how I plan on trimming out each corner column. I will finish off the base of each column with some more decorative trim and finish off the top with some crown and rope bead.

I made some good progress tonight. Columns are almost complete. I should be able to get the top completed tomorrow, sand it all down again, and get a coat of stain on her. I'll order the raised panel doors on Monday.
I'm still debating on whether to go with standard crown moulding across the top or try something different.

Thank you guys for the compliments! This stand is almost finished and the columns have finally taken shape. Funny, they look just like I imagined they would.
I need to finish just a few more pieces of trim around the top and I'm done with the woodwork. I should have it finished, stained, sealed, and laquered by tomorrow night.

WOW
That looks awesome! I imagine that you worked with wood before. I was wondering (sorry if you have said already) how are you going to get that monster in the house after you finish it? Looks wider than a normal door. I guess a pair of french door?
Please keep this tread updated w/ lots of pics. Thanks |

The door I need to get through is 35.5 inches wide. I'll turn the stand on its side and slide it through. Its 35 inches tall so it should go through If the rain stays away this afternoon, I should be able to get her completel finished and I'll post the final pics tonight. Thanks again.

That stand looks great! What are you cutting the moulding with? Just a cheap miter box and flat back saw or do you have something else. Also are you using a finish or trim nail gun or nailing by hand. I love to make stands but I have never made anything that nice.

That's really a work of art. I'm going to forward this to my hubby. He's designing a TV console for the basement, and your trim-work is an inspiration!!!!! Can't wait to see it stained!!!

Wow, that stand is truly an inspiration to me. I only hope I can do work close to as nice as that! Thanks for all of the nice pictures. The stand is built like a tank. I wonder what is heavier, your tank empty or the stand. LOL.

Finally, all done! I will order the doors tomorrow and hopefully have them by next week. They will be birch and I'll stain them the same red mahogany. This turned out pretty nice.
All total, I have around $300 in materials and about 15 hours labor in this stand. That includes the 2x4's, all trim, stain, sealer and laquer. Here's the finished product:
