Sodium carbonate is more effective per unit weight. It weighs about 1.26 more per molecule than sodium bicarbonate, but contains twice the alkalinity.

if 1 liter stock solution contains (1 of the 3);
84 gr sodium bicarbonate = + 2800 kH
53 gr sodiun carbonate = + 2800 kH
40 gr sodium hydroxide = + 2800 kH

There you go.

Thankyou everyone, I want to swap to a 100% carbonate mix because my ph is on the lower side, I will adjust my mix over a period of time.

Cheers Tim

Hi Tim,

If you would like to boost you pH and have the ability to spread the dose; have a look at sodium hydroxide. As long as you handle it with care, it works best for boosting pH (similar to kalkwasser) and you are able to make it much more concentrated than sodiumcarbonate. I first read about this via Randy Holmes.

I did read the new recipe but it was gibberish to me and I didn’t really understand it. I’ve only just got my head around carbonate and bicarbonate.

Cheers Tim

I think that sticking with sodium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate for a while is a good idea. Sodium hydroxide requires careful handling (safety issues) and can cause more damage if a dosing error occurs. A box of baking soda will last a fair amount of time, and is cheap.

true it is dangerous, but so is driving a car if you do not look out. if your dosing pump is not that reliable or if you would like to correcting your kH.. (bi)carbonate is a better choice. I also still have a bucket of both for making corrections.

Cheers Tim
