how do you guys incorporate 'shelves' or attachment points in your metal stands? Always been a bit of a sore spot for me. No 'easy' way to put in any attached shelving with metal stands....
I welcome comments...

Depends on what you're planning to put on the shelves. There are a few options.
You could use magnets and rest shelves on the magnets if the items aren't heavy. If you have a wood skin on the outside of the stand you could drill holes and put shelving pins in there like how many kitchen cabinets hold shelves. If you have a plywood sheet between the stand and the tank you could secure 4 1x2s vertically from the sheet and fasten a shelf to the bottom of the 1x2s. Or get 3 pieces of wood and assemble them into a u shape and have the assembly straddle the sump to make a shelf.

Trying to insert my design, but it keeps reverting to a wire frame. How do you keep the surfaces intact, ie. wood, colors, glass, etc? I Exported as 2D graphic, saved to hard drive and uploaded to Photobucket, both revert. Getting frustrated

Only way I could get it done e was to upload to the wharehouse, then copy the thumbnail. Below are the links, Still would like to just post the exported pics, any help would be appreciated.
Note: This stand is out of 1.25" square tube with .125 wall. Its going under my 180g mixed reef. http://i1383.photobucket.com/albums/...ps73573906.jpg http://i1383.photobucket.com/albums/...ps73573906.jpg |

I wanted to get someone's opinion if this stand would be sufficient for my 105 rimless.
Stand dim 48.5in L x 24.5in W x 40in T It's 1x1 steel tubing with gussets. There was a miscommunication on the person building, I communicated 1.5 steel tubing and ended up with 1in. I'm going to add 3/4in top to the stand. Thanks for any feedback in advance! [IMG][/IMG] |

The only thing that I would do, and it might not really be needed, is add support somewhere on the frontside.
Even if it wasn't directly in the middle, but a little off center for accessibility. That's just my opinion. |

So my first attempt at making a 72" long stand for my 280 out of 3 X 1.5" tube did not work. I have around .1" of deflection in the middle unsupported portion with a 3600 pound uniform load.

Yes, It has 3 cross-beams on the top and bottom, 16.125" apart. I will post pictures tomorrow and hopefully have a chance to play with the design and request feedback once updated.

I wonder if the deflection is caused by the overhang since the back side doesn't show the same amount.

The 4" overhang is a large part of the problem. The tank will be an in wall install and I want to have an overhang to make up the majority of the wall thickness. Even the back side of the stand that is better supported still has ~.06" of deflection so the overhang is not my only problem. I forgot to bring my work computer home to work on the stand but will try and do so tomorrow night.

This was my original 72" design for a 180 peninsula tank. Stand is combination of 1.5" square tube w/ .125 wall and 1" square tube also w/ .125 wall. Pink is the 1.5 and blue is the 1".
This is the load test. Based on a 3500 lb static load it achieved a safety margin of 3.7 or 12,950 lbs carrying capacity. This is why my current design has changed to using 1.25" square tube for all components. (See post 1956). I also removed the back opening since it will no longer be a peninsula but against a wall. |

Thanks for posting your design. I will add some similar elements to my stand. Here is an underside view of my original design.

I'm designing my stand for an All Glass 180 that will be an in wall build. I'm planning on using 1 1/2" square tubing. My question is how tall does everyone make their stand, i.e. What is the height from floor to the base of the tank? I want to provide enough height to comfortably access my Trigger Ruby Elite sump, which is 15" tall. I'm considering 40", which puts the top of the tank roughly at 65". Other than having to use a step stool for routine maintenance, can anyone advise/recommend a height other than 40"? I noticed one of the original posters designed theirs at that height.

JWags911SC - I would say that 30" to 40" is the norm, just make sure that you have access to get it in the location needed. Most doors have an opening of less than 36".

This a first rendering of my square tube steel frame for a 280 gal tank (72" x 30" x 30"). The top frame and the verticals are 3" x 1 1/2" x 1/8". The bottom frame and the 3 braces in the top frame are 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" x 1/8". The bottom will have a steel sheet--not sure what gauge would be best. Feedback is desired.

I'm thinking of trying that, or sticky-back velcro.

Hello everyone.
In next few weeks I'll be moving my reef from 200l to 450l. Tank should be ready next week. My problem is stand. I always had wooden cabinets, but this time I have to go in steel. Weir box has 3 holes 35mm in base of tank only 38mm from edge of tank! So wooden support won't be tick enough... I've been told that 35x35x2 mm box steel will be plenty for aquarium 150x50x60cm if there will be central support + some bars under tank. |
