NY Aquatics tang came with ich. Now what...

So I didn't take the advice of all the forums in the world and put a fish in my display tank without quarantine.

I noticed NY aquatics selling their purple tangs at a discount price. I succumbed to the pressure and bought one. It came the next day later. Lots of parts of his fin missing from being bullied, etc. Didn't have a problem with acclamation and it has been eating and swimming about great for the past week. His color and lines started coming back but last night I noticed white spots!

I can't believe I put all of my other fish in danger. I never quarantined because I get all of my fish from the same LFS and have never had a problem in the past few years from him. I keep a peaceful tank. I have a shimp/goby pair, clownfish, wrasse, and two cardinals.

Will they be ok and is there anything I can do for the purple tang? I have had him since the 5th of this month. Looks like he's going to die right on their stay live guarantee date lol. I have been feeding extra with rods food and non flavored seaweed from the supermarket.

Welcome to the hobby. You should always QT any new Fish, no matter where it comes from. If you don’t plan on drastic measures like setting up a QT and removing all the fish for 72 days... no. I would feed a varied, enriched diet and hope the purple tangs immune system will recover and fight off the Ich.

Purple Tangs are tough fish, I doubt the ich will kill it, you said it was eating, so that's good, Tangs are extremely susceptible to ich, in fact my Purple Tang and all my reef fish had it, they just build up an immunity to it or it just doesn't affect them anymore, as long as they aren't stressed or extreme condition changes, I'm not sure what the scientific explanation is, but I would never try and treat my Reef, and none of my fish died from it, going on 10 years for this set up.

Would getting some extra vitamines like Selcon help?

i love how people quick to blame the source they get ich.

you dont QT fish! you know they dont show sign dont mean they dont have ich right? new fish get stress, get ich, then surely whoever sell you the last fish get all the blame for bringing in disease. i find that funny.

unless you QT everything from snail to corals, everything that enters your system for at least 4-6 weeks, you have ich in your system. trying to get an ich free system is kinda pointless and a waste of time.

I agree with Dmorty217. It doesn't matter where your get livestock from. The wholesaler DOES NOT QT fish with a 10 day copper treatment, nor does your LFS. Therefore all fish sold have the potential to introduce Ich into your DT and that's the bottom line. Fish can look perfect but can still host Ich in it's dormant stage. Best thing to do is set-up a small QT and run a 10 day course of copper for any new fish before adding it to your DT. Otherwise you'll end up having to strip your tank down to catch your fish in order to treat (a big time consuming headache) and leave your DT fallow (without fish) for two months - I have done this a few times in the past - not pleasant. One time I added a pair of clowns, looked great initially, 3 days later they showed symptoms of Brooklynella hostilis = wiped out €700 of fish in 24 hours. Spending $100 on a QT set-up will save you a lot of time, headache etc. Hope this helps.

Most copper treatments are 30days. Coppersafe is 14day minimum. Not sure if it’s cuz it’s different copper or what, but I run mine for 3-4weeks minimum. Usually 4.
Plus I do furan2 and general cure with the treatment as well.
