Looking good Steve,
One more suggestion from me if you want it. I would go ahead and get rid of that Green Star Polyp as well. I love the look of the stuff too but mine has grown literally out of control. It has wrapped up and around a few corals and started to suffocate them until I moved them. It just keeps encroaching on everything around it. I would remove mine but it is attached to several different pieces of rock that are supporting the whole left side of my tank. Again, just my opinion and two cents. I wish I could do something about mine.

thanks reefwaters believe it or not the star polips are the only thing i can keep in check in that corner, the rock gets a little to close to the other one & it has to strech to get on to it & when it does, i just cut it away but trust me i think they are going to come out even though it does look cool they do grow fast & i have to be on top of it to prume it back.

Steve, I have some questions about using the Roto Zip bit.
I want about a 150 gallon tank with several holes for a closed loop and an external overflow. But I really dont feel like selling any organs to pay for a Canadian built masterpiece at around $3000 including shipping. They are beautiful and incredibly well built tanks, but I have a hard time with the money. I am thinking about getting a Eurobraced tank from GlassCages with no holes or overflow. Do you think the Roto Zip could handle glass that thick? The tank would be 60x36x17. I want one overflow in the back center. Do you think the glass would be weakened by the notch? How long do you think it would take to drill each hole? Just doing some brain storming. Im trying to save a little cash but I would also hate to spend $1000 on a GC tank and then ruin it before I ever got water in the damned thing. What are your thoughts on the matter?

i dont think it would be a problem i just drilled a 18 inch slot on a tank from glasscages for a friend & it went well, this tank was a weird brace but my buddy bought it used, just paln it out & u will be fine it took about 20 minutes to do the slot.

Thanks for the help Steve.

tile bit is the way to go.
first u make ur pater using the tile bit on an angle, then u make a couple more passes & u take a 1/2 inch section & just shave the glass down till u go through & after that its a piece of cake u just keep going up & down till the glass is cut.

Any new pics of your tank. I know this thread is kinda old, but I am going to be doing a very similar style tank soon, and I often find myself looking back on this thread for inspiration!

steve,
Just to recap (again) 1. draw the circle (if that is what i'm cutting) 2. angle the bit (like a pencil when writing?) and trace the circle a few times to etch the pattern. 3. take a small 1/2" section and work it all the way through back and forth with the tip of the bit 4. once all the way through, use the bit in a ?sawing motion? with the side of the bit to complete the cut. Let me know if I got this correct. By the way, read all nine pages. Nice tank, nice work, very inspirational |
