Seeing all this out of water for probably many hours is not making me worry about my corals during a water change..... but on a serious note its nice that you bring us along your journey and your home to see this part of the reef from this prospective.

Looks like Ill definately be going to visit Darwin next year. Seems like July, August is the time to visit. Best for low tides. Can you conform that Lewy.
Just remember guys not all of Australia is like where Lewy lives.
A lot of people who live in Australia would struggle to live up in Darwin or Northern Queensland or the upper half of western Australia. The humidity is quiet high.
I personally think you guys in America are spoiled with the quality of corals you get from all regions all over the world.
Corals over here are very pricey, especialy premium pieces. Your blue, purple, pink etc gigs go from $2200 + for one anemone. So there very pricey if you can get one. Greens are roughly around $300+.
Browns are a lot cheaper.
We aren't allowed to import any corals or inverts so we really rely on what the collects ship to our lfs. Inverts are very pricey to, cleaner shrimp or blood shrimp are normally $100+ for one shrimp. Average price is $150 to $180 a shrimp.
Keep posting those pics, Ill definately be visiting in the new year.

Ok this may have been covered somewhere in the 51 pages but I haven't went through all yet. Can you please share how you are allowed out on the reefs? I know you walk out but is it against the law (I thought reefs were protected) (I know they are everywhere), Also how are you allowed to just simply collect frags for yourself? If I tried that in the keys and got caught (well I would learn not to drop the soap real fast). And we have boring bland "coral".

Darwin is quite possibly the last place on earth where it is still legal to collect for ornamental use = within reason. There is a limit and strict rules as to what you can't take.
Personally I don't think it will last much longer.

From a recent govt. investigation into collection of local benthic species:
4.3 Private aquaria
Private aquarium owners living close to areas where benthic and associated species
exist may collect their own aquarium species rather than purchase them from the
industry.
There are no commercial outlets in Darwin or Gove that consistently have benthic or
associated species for sale to the local aquarium owners (licensees consign their
harvest interstate).
There may be a requirement to address the private collection of benthic and other
aquarium species, especially around highly populated areas. At this stage there is no
estimate of the species and amount harvested.
There are two Aquatic Life Reserves in Darwin Harbour, the East Point Reef and
Doctors Gully and the collection of benthic and associated species is prohibited in
those reserves.

I agree with ozfish. I think it will not last much longer as well.

Since downsizing my setup I have not been collecting any frags whatsoever. When we do go out again it will be purely for interests sake.

I actually get my livestock locally now from a collector with collectors licence.

I really enjoy watching this thread Lewy. If and when you do have a chance to go out there again, please do share any new pics. How about an update on your tank? I'm sure everyone here would love to see it.

Is OP still in this thread?

If so....I got a cousin in Melbourne. He's got a (young) son and wife (old). I told them it would be a great "family day activity" to go down to the local tide pools and collect stuff....then ship it to me here in America.

Are there any decent corals/fish in the tide pools near Melbourne? Or is that only up near Cairns/etc?

thanks

Also, trivia fact about Melbourne: Did you know that San Francisco is CLOSER to Melbourne than Los Angeles is? No joke, look it up.

Melbourne waters are to cold, to far south.. You need to head up to the top half of Australia to find corals and fish, more towards the tropics.
Head about 2500km north of Melbourne towards Bunderberg, where the reef starts.
You've also got western Australia, Reefs there to.

You walk out in between the corals, that's how you walk out there. You might have to walk a long way around to avoud stepping on corals, but that's how it's supposed to be done. Here in the US in The Keys you will get the hell fined out of you for walking on coral formations. I witnessed rangers in Looe Key park pull people out of the water and fine them for standing on the reef crest, $1500 ea.

I doubt there are many large pelagic sharks inshore like that at low tide. Even if there were, they generally mind their own business.
