CA reactor for large sps tank?

I have posted this over in the equiment forum with litte pesponse so.... I'm plan a new system and was wondering about what size reacto to get. The display is going to be 270 gal 100% SPS. The total water volume will be a round 400 gals. I plan on getting a GEO but wonder if the 624 will be big enough or do i need to get the 818?

Well it will be close. and then the 818 would be a lot .
I would always err on the bigger model. BTW u can't go wrong with GEO great reactors-customer service and built like a tank.

Also the MTC Pro Cal is very nice! You can't go wrong with MTC's products either. Very well built and designed.

the MTC Pro Cal is one that was on my list, our local board is doing a group buy on Geo's and i can't pass on the price. I'm just having a hard time picking a size.

Can't say I blame you if you can get in on a group buy. The MTC is not a cheap reactor, but well worth what I paid for it.

MTC PROCAL is an awesome reactor. I have it on my 225g SPS tank and right now I have it dialed way down with a decent # of corals. I should be in good shape once the tank starts to really mature.

MTC reactor here as well. My new tank is a 270 Gallon and will be all SPS.

Schuran JetStream 1 or 2 with perilistic pump. I saw one guy use a JS1 on a 600 gallon system and he had no problems. You MUST have a perilistic pump for this reactor to work at it's full potential.

Hey Guys,

Hate to hijack, but I've also been considering either the MTC Procal or the GEO 624.

Do you who own the Procal find it fussy or do you need to tweak it often? Also, is there a PH probe port in the unit, I don't see mention of one on the web site.

How do you feed your procal? I have a peristaltic pump I was planning on using with whichever Ca RX I get, will this work with the procal?

What type of media are you running in yours?

Lastly, is there a reason in particular why you chose to go with the MTC unit over the GEO or was this a consideration? I had their Ozone reactor for a short time (before I decided ot to run Ozone) at it was VERY well built.

waxi as I stated previuosly I chose GEO for many reasons.

Customer service is by far rthe best-this reactor vs others is easy to service and uses an eheim pump(runs forever). Dialing it in is a breeze.
There's tons of reactor users with this particular brand and any eventualities are easily resolved, particularly in this forum.



MTC procal is a great reactor it was a close race for me.

As far as media I currently used small ARM but will be changing to large type next changeover so i'm able to lower my ph and perhaps get more output.

Details on my MTC Procal.
- No fussing ever with the reactor, IMO that is a function of the needle valve and/or regulator you purchase for the unit. As I paid $70 for my needle valve, the only time I adjust the set-up is when I change out my CO2 tank.
- Procal comes with a pump to self feed. When I got mine, I upgraded to an Iwaki, but you can get various pumps for the unit.
- I am using ARM media, small
- unit is very well built, you could play football with it
- I bought this as it was highly recommended at the time and I saw the unit in action, and customer reviews were generally very positive.
- I have required no service on this unit to date, and the operating instructions are quite good

On a 270g display, the 624 will be fine. GEO reactors are very efficient. If the need arises for more capacity, you can always add a second chamber and run the reactor harder.

That what I have bben told that the 624 could do 700+ gals. I think the GEO 624 is the reactor that i will be getting. thanks for all the response.

Those are all nice reactors but for the money and features you can't beat a Barr Aquatics reactor now built by Austin Oceans.

What I don't get about the Barr units is how the feed works, it says you can but don't have to use a feed pump.

Would I be able to run it with my peristaltic pump?

That sounds about right. They are extremely efficient, and virtually hands off once set up. I'm suprised more people don't use these because they are very reasonably priced. You can pressurize a GEO, which means you can tap off of a feed pump with no problems.

MTC makes an superb reactor too. It's a sound design and incorporates all the bells and whistles. There really isn't much more you can ask for that isn't already included with a Pro-Cal.

The only drawbacks (if you want to call it that) to a Pro Cal are it's down flow reactor, and not quite as CO2 efficient. It only comes in blue (serious design flaw)
