Mario,
Would using a 2x2 screw strip help? Remember the strip doesn't have to come all the way up to the top. You could use the screw strips in reverse (by that I mean which direction the screws are put in), then use 1/2" or 3/4" plywood for a very strong skin, and remove the screw strips from the stand once the skin is installed. The strips mainly serve to keep the forms square and once installed the skin will serve that purpose as well or better.

awesome thread, glad i found it. I will be starting my build in a week or two hopefully and will be using the orignal plans to due so. Hopefully i'll end up with something as nice as so of these.
I have run into a hitch when looking into cabinet doors, however. The whole point of a DIY in my opinion is to do it better and cheaper than a manufactured product. The doors I have found are nearly 75 each for a 20"x30" door. this puts the build, with materials and time factored in even to or more than the cost of a nicer All-Glass stand of a basic oceanic. Besides the links posted earlier does anyone have some info on cheap but decent doors? Thanks for all the pics and post guys. I hope to contribute soon. -nick

Don't forget to account for Seismic load acting on the top of the tank if you live in a Seismically active region

SQUARE UNF OAK 21" X 30", $17.50/each https://securewsch01.websitecomplete....asp?prod=3627 They also have an 18x30 but not 20x30, and they have other styles, wood types, and finished, but that's probably what you're looking for. |

If you put [ IMG] and [/ IMG] (without the spaces) around the links the pictures should load automatically. Or click the IMG button on the "post reply" page and it'll format it for you.

ok well it took long enough and i got the main structure down, being a newb in wood work i have to give cudos to those who are able to do this well.
my stand is definatly not perfect even though i took 2-3 weeks of planning and getting exact measurements and cuts, though it all came down to knowing how to screw in a screw. jeez, i have a lot to learn, well after a couple frustrating days here it is. the stand tends to woble a bit, im sure that when the tank (weighing around 300 lbs) sits on it, it will even out...hopefully. plus the beams arnt exactly touching either, i am once again hoping that when the weight is put on then it'll even out and fill in. if someone thinks otherwise then let me know. all the vertical beams are cuts down to the closest i can get them with a mitre saw. so it should be pretty darn accurate. any thoughts? its a trapazoid by the way 48" back 36" front

Question? Do the screw strips get attached to the top and bottom frames at the end points only?
I wanted to screw the uprights into the screw strips every few inches for added strength but thought that would make the strips more load bearing. |

mario4254, Looking good.
drpo21, I'm glad to see your stand came out so well. It will be great to see the final result. xCGx, the screw strips are intended to only keep the legs between the top and bottom frames. The legs themselves are hideously strong. There is no need for so many screws.
