So the Styrofoam won't hurt the integrity of my glass tank if I just put the Styrofoam around the rim?

Thinking out loud:
I am planning a 300 gallon plywood tank with base messurements: 90" x 30". The tank will have a 2" x 1/8" angle iron frame. For the top supporting elements of the stand, I am thinking of using double-uped 2x4s with 2 2"x1/8" angle irons sandwiched between them. The legs would be doubled up as well. Doing it this way, do you think I could get away with just one leg in the middle on the back side?

okkiedokki,

That looks like a glass tank with a plastic rim. If it is DO NOT USE STYROFOAM. Styrofoam is used for acrylic and glass tanks without trim. It is not recommended for tanks with plastic trim. I would find the high spot and sand/shave it down. This may take some time but none of the other options are really safe.

JC Pollman,
I take it to mean you will have the two angles flat to flat to form a "T" with the wood under the top of the "T". As I don't have my engineering books at home, I will have to wait until tomorrow to run the numbers on it. The only thing I can say for sure at this point is I hope these are stainless steel angles that you are using. For something that long I would consider having a leg in the middle both front and back.

To Everyone Else:
Following the split, I will be reposting the original template as well as the common questions/answers.

Yeah it is the glass with the plastic rim. Thanks for the reply, I'll have to start sanding it down tonight.

Just to be sure, it is ok to use 3/4" plywood on the top of a stand when using a glass tank with the plastic edge?

I want to thank you for this thread as I have started my own build. So far total cost is $21 using Scraps from Home Depot!

Does my stand look strong enough.
Its going to be for a Perfecto 30Breeder tank which is actually 28gal. Since its a 30x18x12 not like the AGA that is 36x18x12

The dimnesions of the stand are
30x18x30.
I havnt put the shelf in the bottom yet for the 10g sump. Also i have to skin it..but as is does it look like it will be strong enough?
This was my first real stand I built and always worries me

Yes, it will definitely be strong enough, especially if your skinning it. Looks good!

Man, I had a failed attempt at building my stand....my cuts were not straight. Going to go to a friends to have him cut them for me and help me build since he is better with this kind of stuff.

at least here, lowes wood also was much straighter & the edges were much more square instead of rounded-over

Ok, I have a challenge, I am trying to build a stand for my 90 gallon tank. Not to bad, but it is a Surfline front and the sides are not equal lenght. The back is 4 FT and the front is an S shape, so how in the world do you support that?

Just curious, and I am sorry if this has been asked - I am buying 2 40b (36x18x16), so I am planning on making a stand similar to a straight 72" long stand. Do I need to put cross braces in the center to support the inside edges of the 2 tanks?

Hi MSU Fan,

From what I understand, the inside cross braces from the front frame to the back frame are to prevent the two pieces from spreading apart. I would think if you place a vertical support under the cross brace (front and back) then there should be sufficient support for the tanks. Some one correct me if I am wrong. I will be building my first stand for my 180 g using the information I found on this thread. There is lots of good information, ideas, pictures and technical information to support these stands.

her eis the update of my stand skinned. I only have to put in the shelf on the inside for my 10g sump and a door. I am going to putty all the seams and screws so they will not show once I stain or paint it

on the Surf line Tank yhe difference in depth goes from 20 1/2 inches in depth at it wides point to 16 1/2 at its shallowest. I am thinking of just using the normal templete and adding an additional 2x4 front of the stand panel that would support the tank fron 17 1/2 to 20 1/2 in and all corners will be suported. Any ideas?

I don't post very often, but time to make one!

I'm upsizing our tank from 72x18x24 to 72x27x24, so it's 50% wider than before. I built the last stand and it was way over engineered, but worked.

Unlike all the other stands I've seen, I want the tank to overhang the base at the front by 6 inches, so any design tips would be appreciated. The current tank overhangs its stand by 2 inches.

To get the ball rolling I knocked this design up, ignore any slight mis-alignments thats just my lack of skill with the software.

I was planning on using 2x4 all round, lined in ply and with a 18mm ply sheet on top. The tank is glass and there is no sump or other equipment underneath so mid supports are not a problem.

or

Chris

If your planning to run a sump, you may want to consider putting some sealant on the inside of the stand. Thats what I'm doing currently.

Great thread! I have a 29 gallon tank I am wanting to put a sump in and don't have enough room under my current stand. Not really wanting to wasted alot of money on another piece of crap partical board stand. I think I will build my own. I was planning on putting a 10 gallon sump under my tank but may build big enough to put a 20 gallon long underneath for sump.

Glad I found this thread! Lots of help.THanks

Agreed, The HD wood had rounded edges, and was more warped then the Lowes wood.
