Can you identify this crab?

I found this guy sitting on the bottom of my sand bed. I'd seen him in my rockwork before, but never saw his full body. I'm not sure if this is his molt or if his carcass. Either way, anyone know what type of crab it is?

not sure what kind but it doesn't look to friendly. black tipped and pointy claws are no good. i would keep an eye out when the lights go out and try to catch him.

I don't know too many crabs that DO look friendly He's been in the tank for months and never harmed a thing. I see him come partially out of his rock when there is food floating around.

Looks like a member of the Xanthid family. Typically, BAD.

I have always gone by the crab rule of pointy pinchers is bad.. Those are not for algae picking, they are for hunting. If it was me personally I would not keep him in my reef tank..

So is this is molted shell, or is he dead?

The other weird tidbit is I was looking at my tank the other day and I noticed a small rock (about 1 inch) wedged in a part of my 10lb piece of LR. It was definitely out of place, and had no coralline algae on it - so I knew it was moved there, but not by me. I reached inside the tank to move the rock. It came out, and there was a crevace with this little guy on the inside. He didn't move when. I replugged the hole. The next morning, I looked at the tank and the rock had fallen from the crevace and next to it was this molt/crab. .

I had a crab that looked very similar to that (are its legs hairy?) that definitely chowed down on some Acros - it beheaded a small frag of A. efflorescens that I had growing in my frag tank.

No hair on the legs. Looks like a marbled xanthid maybe...
