Nice stills as always, but any chance we are going to see a video in the near future?

Wow. Truly amazing collection! Of all of those beautiful photos my favorite is definitely the one of three clarions and two bandits. The group shots of the clarions, big and small are uncanny!!
Jawdropping... |

Excuse the noob question, but what's the reason for blacking out the DT. I get that it seemed to lower aggressive attitudes, but how's it work long term?

Speaking for myself....
IME, for the smaller and/or new-from-QT fishes to acclimate to the new water parameters, new tank, new aquascape, new fish, etc. while the tank was completely dark. When adding/acclimating new fish into a display or QT tank, by not only shutting the lights, but completely blacking out the tank, this allows the new fish to feel as comfortable as possible, both physically and mentally, before the "social" dynamic, including aggression, re-establishes itself when the sun rises (lights!). Its similar to re-arranging the rock work in a smaller, more manageable tank, so as to re-establish territory when there is aggression or new additions. In a really big tank, with hundreds and hundreds of pounds of LR, and if its cemented in place, rearranging the Aquascape, is sometimes not an option. The acclimation of a fish does not just consist of matching water parameters, as far as what most hobbiests can test for. It can take days, even weeks, for a fish to fully acclimate to new conditions. In the Long Term... IMO, a fish that is acclimated properly has a HUGE long term advantage over a poorly acclimated fish. Most fish can see or sense, perhaps, that a fish is stressed/ill, etc. Whether its instinctual or not, they are preyed upon, and bullied further, in some instances. Any fish that starts its life in your tank like this, is most likely not going to be a long-term resident. Just my two pennies.... |

would add that it also comes in handy when moving a less aggressive fish into an aggressive tank... my rock is not cemented...I rearranged and added new marco to the top 1/3 of the tank... ime, blacking out the tank really helps to keep things chill during transitions.. |

Thanks for posting up the video, tank looks great, a lot of movement going on, it must look incredible in person... Just out of curiosity, are most of the pics you share with us taken at night with the lights on, or daytime with just natural light?

Sorry to read about the Bandits, I don't think you should beat yourself up about the clam feeding. These were awfully small fish, chances of them immediately devouring big meaty foods upon acclimation is pretty slim.
These fish are so small and have such a small digestive tract and high metabolism at this age the rigors of collection and travel are pretty substantial. I look forward to photos of Blondie growing up with you. I added a pair of Venustus last week. They stayed within a foot of each other for the first 5 days and stayed out and visible, then over the weekend they slipped into the rock work. Difficult to keep track of them now but they are venturing out. Going to start looking for a Colini or two over the summer. Watching the Navarchus mature is going to be fun too. Over the years I have grown Korans, Imperators, Cortez, Chrysurus, Gold Flakes and Blue Face. I have kept several Navarchus but never started with a Juvenile. It's one of my favorite fish for my fish only tanks. But I have never had the cajones to put one in my reef. Keep posting the photos (please) !!! Dave B
